Have you recently been considering buying an electric cargo bike for your small family? The larger cargo capacity of the Electric Bakfiets is appealing, but the better handling and easier use of the Longtail E-bike also seem to be a major advantage. So, which one should you choose to truly meet your family's daily needs? In this article, we'll answer that question by comparing both bikes from the perspectives of daily riding experience and practical functionality.
The Concept and Design of Longtail E-Bikes
The defining feature of a longtail e-bike is its extended rear frame, which allows for a larger rear rack or the installation of child seats. Compared with a traditional e-bike, the longtail retains much of the original agility while adding significant carrying capacity.
A typical setup allows the rider to mount two child seats or a large pannier over the rear wheel. Some brands even offer modular rear racks that can be switched within minutes—from a “family mode” with child seats to a “cargo mode” for shopping or errands.
The Concept and Design of Bakfiets E-Bikes
Unlike the longtail, the Bakfiets is a classic front-loading cargo e-bike, commonly seen in cities across the Netherlands, Denmark, and Germany. Its design centers on a large wooden or plastic box placed between the handlebars and the front wheel. This box can hold bulky items or provide safe seating for children.
Most models offer a load capacity of 150–250 kg, enough to carry two or even three children, a pet, a stroller, or even small pieces of furniture when moving house.
Longtail E-Bike vs. Bakfiets : Functionality and Riding Experience
Longtail E-Bike
Handling: The riding position is very similar to a standard e-bike, making it easy for most riders to get used to. It's particularly well-suited for those who need to move flexibly between city streets and suburban paths. When I tested the Fiido T2 longtail e-bike, I noticed the balance felt more solid compared with a regular e-bike. However, when riding fully loaded, you do need to rely on extra leg strength to keep the bike steady when braking or coming to a stop.
Carrying Capacity: This depends on the manufacturer's specifications, but most longtail e-bikes are rated for around 200 kg. That's enough for medium loads such as two children plus groceries, or an adult rider with additional cargo.
Maneuverability: With a frame closer in size to a standard e-bike, the longtail can fit into regular garages or elevators in apartment buildings. In tight spots, you can even lift and carry it over obstacles—something that's much harder to do with a Bakfiets.
Safety: Because the longtail is shorter and narrower than a Bakfiets, it's easier to navigate bike lanes, sharp corners, and crowded intersections. Riders also get better visibility when approaching blind turns or crossing busy areas.
Electric Bakfiets
Handling: From a design perspective, the Bakfiets has a longer frame and a front cargo box, which makes the steering feel different from a standard e-bike. Because of the large box in front, the handlebars are usually connected to the front wheel via a steering rod or linkage system rather than directly. For beginners, this often creates a sense of “lag” or heaviness in the steering that takes some time to get used to. Compared with longtail models, the Bakfiets performs better in terms of balance on flat roads and everyday city riding. However, when tackling hills or riding fully loaded, the extra weight and rolling resistance make handling noticeably harder, increasing reliance on both the rider's leg strength and the motor's performance.
Carrying Capacity: Most Bakfiets models are rated to carry between 150–250 kg. With the load concentrated in the wide, low-slung front box, they are ideal for transporting bulky items or accommodating larger families with two or more children.
Maneuverability: Due to their larger size, Bakfiets bikes are not well-suited for small apartments or tight storage spaces. They work best for households with a private garage or outdoor storage area, so it's important to think carefully about where you'll keep it before buying.
Safety: Compared with longtail e-bikes, the Bakfiets has a clear safety advantage thanks to its low center of gravity and stable design. The front box usually comes equipped with seat belts and side walls for protection, and many models can be fitted with a rain canopy. With children seated in front, parents can keep an eye on them at all times, adding an extra layer of reassurance.
Which Cargo E-Bike Is Right for Your Family
Earlier, we compared the riding experience and strengths of longtail e-bikes and Bakfiets e-bikes. Now, let's organize their key features to give you a clearer picture of which option best matches your family's everyday needs.
Small Family + City Apartment + Short Urban Trips + Limited Budget
If you have a small family, live in a city apartment, primarily travel short distances, or have a limited budget, a long-tail e-bike is undoubtedly a better choice. Lightweight and flexible, it can navigate city traffic like a regular bicycle. It's also more affordable than a Bakfiets, allowing you to stay within your budget while still accommodating child care, daily groceries, and short commutes.
If you have more than two children or frequently need to transport bulky items such as strollers, pets, or gardening supplies, then a Bakfiets is the better fit. With children seated up front, parents can easily keep an eye on them and engage in conversation throughout the ride.
